WILDLIFE AND PLANTS
Presque Isle State Park, while a major recreational park, is also a unique ecological sanctuary for animals, birds, fish, plants, and flowers. In fact, over 330 species of birds visit or live on Presque Isle each year. Audubon named Presque Isle the number one birding site in Pennsylvania, and Birding World called it one of the best birding locations in the United States.
A little-known fact is that Presque Isle has seven different ecological zones within its boundaries. These zones range from shoreline to climax forest and show one of the best examples of ecological succession in North America. It is home for 633 species of plants, including the stateâs largest number of endangered, threatened, and rare plants.
Many animals roam the woods and fields of Presque Isle. They include deer, coyotes, minks, muskrats, beavers, turkeys, and rabbits plus many others. Thirty-five different species of butterflies plus over 85 different dragonflies and damselflies can also be found. The waters of the park include over 50 species of fish. Many varieties of frogs, toads, and snakes can be found on the park.
Walks on the trails of the park will introduce visitors to varied wildflowers, both common and rare. These wildflowers can be seen from spring until late fall all over Presque Isle. Guests at the park who take one of the free pontoon boat rides or kayak or canoe in the lagoons will see the many water-related plants growing there.
Each day on Presque Isle produces a new adventure, with wildlife and plants taking center stage.
